Where this coffee comes from
Our Honduras coffee is grown in the Marcala region, hand selected by a certified Q grader and imported directly from family owned farms into our roasting facility in Miami, Florida. We participate in a crop sharing program in Honduras that helps small farmers get their organic specialty coffee into the international market. Once the coffee arrives in the United States, every batch is processed and roasted in a CCOF Certified Organic facility under the USDA National Organic Program.
How to brew it
Grind fresh right before you brew. Use about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 oz of water, or roughly 60 g per litre, with water between 195 and 205°F.
- Drip: medium grind, 1:16 coffee to water
- Pour over: medium-fine grind, 30 second bloom
- French press: coarse grind, 4 minute steep
- Espresso: fine grind, 18 g in, 36 g out, 25 to 30 seconds
Questions we get asked
Is this coffee low acid?
Yes. The Marcala growing region and our medium-dark roast profile both push acidity down, so this cup reads smooth and chocolatey rather than bright or sharp.
Is Kafie 1901 coffee gluten free and non-GMO?
Yes. Coffee beans are naturally gluten free, there is no genetically modified coffee in commercial production, and our beans are USDA Certified Organic, which prohibits GMOs outright.
How fresh is it when it ships?
We roast in small batches in Miami and ship soon after roasting, so the bag that reaches you is weeks fresher than supermarket coffee.
Do you sell it ground?
This is whole bean coffee. Whole bean holds its aroma far longer than pre-ground, so we recommend grinding right before you brew.
How many cups are in a 1 lb bag?
About 30 to 45 cups depending on how strong you brew. Most 1 lb bags in specialty coffee are actually 12 oz, so this one goes a third further.
