Why Sumatra is the low acid choice
Sumatran coffee is processed with a wet hulling method local to Indonesia, where the parchment comes off the bean at a much higher moisture content than anywhere else in the world. That single difference is what produces the heavy body, the earthy depth and the famously muted acidity. Pair that with a medium roast and you get one of the smoothest, least acidic cups in specialty coffee, which is why it comes up so often for people managing a sensitive stomach or acid reflux.
Where this coffee comes from
Hand selected by a certified Q grader and imported directly from family owned farms into our roasting facility in Miami, Florida, where every batch is roasted in a CCOF Certified Organic facility under the USDA National Organic Program.
How to brew it
- French press: coarse grind, 1:15, 4 minute steep. This is the method that shows off the body.
- Drip: medium grind, 1:16 coffee to water at 195 to 205°F
- Cold brew: coarse grind, 1:8, steep 16 hours
- Espresso: fine grind, 18 g in, 36 g out for a heavy, earthy shot
Questions we get asked
What does Sumatra coffee taste like?
Earthy, woody and spicy on the nose, syrupy in the body, with roasted caramel, chocolate and a smooth cocoa finish. Almost no brightness or tang.
Is Sumatra good for acid reflux or a sensitive stomach?
It is one of the lowest acidity origins in the world thanks to wet hulling, so it is a common choice for people who find bright coffees uncomfortable. It is coffee, not medical advice, so listen to your own body.
Is this organic Sumatra Mandheling?
Yes, USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade, roasted in a CCOF Certified Organic facility.
Best brew method?
French press. The heavy body and low acidity are made for full immersion brewing.
Is it gluten free and non-GMO?
Yes to both. Coffee is naturally gluten free and organic certification prohibits GMOs.
